About Rodney J. Paul

Rodney J. Paul is President of SEE Sports, a company that specializes in the promotion of education and entertainment of sports, and Professor of Sport Management at Syracuse University.  He developed and now directs the first-of-its kind undergraduate program in Sport Analytics for Syracuse. His  background is in Economics as he earned his PhD in Applied Economics from Clemson University in 2000.  In addition, he designed and teaches courses on Hockey Operations and the Business of Hockey as part of the Online MBA in Hockey Management offered by Athabasca University in Canada.  He previously taught at Montana State University and St. Bonaventure University.

Dr. Paul researches and teaches in the areas of the Economics and Finance of Sports.  He is the author of over 100 journal articles and book chapters in a variety of academic journals and professional books, mainly on topics related to modeling attendance and television ratings in sports, competitive balance, uncertainty of outcome, the efficient markets hypothesis, and the use of information from betting markets to help understand and explain consumer behavior related to the sports marketplace.  His research has been included in the MIT/Sloan Sports Analytics and SABR Analytics conferences in recent years. 

Articles and interviews related to his research on sports has appeared in the New York Times, ESPN the Magazine, NBC Sports, the New York Daily News, NPR, Wharton Moneyball Radio, the Univi podcast (a free flowing conversation with academic’s leading minds), Buffalo Sabres Gamenight, and other newspapers, websites, radio, and television outlets.  He served as an outside consultant, providing business analytics and forecasts, on the NHL/AHL West project where western NHL teams brought their top minor league affiliates closer to their home cities.  Additionally, he has consulted for two NFL teams and a variety of minor league sports franchises.
