Josh Norris had an incredible season for the Belleville Senators of the American Hockey League. He ultimately wound up winning the Red Garrett Memorial Award as the league’s best rookie. To illustrate his season visually, I chose 4 charts to put into a dashboard. The upper left chart shows the points earned per game over the AHL Season. Points are shown by height of the line, Goals are noted by darker red, and Assists by size. You can see he averaged over a point-per-game, putting together very nice stretches with multi-point games. The upper right again illustrates his performance over the course of the season, but in this one, shots on goal are the main focus. Shots are shown by the height of the line, with goals illustrated from black (0) to red (2), and points by size. Notice the consistent shot effort, with few instances of zero shots generated in a game. The bottom two charts show his performance against different opponents to illustrate how he did not just dominate against the poorest opponents but put up great numbers against foes Belleville played both frequently and infrequently. The left-hand bottom chart shows assists-per-game (horizontal) vs. goals-per-game (vertical) by opponent, with the frequency of playing the opponent color-coded (red indicates more games) and the shape noting opponents where Norris had game-winning goals. The lower-right chart uses a bar chart to note points-per-game by opponent with the color again representing frequency of playing that opponent. Personally, I really enjoyed watching Norris play on AHL.TV (an excellent and cost-effective platform to watch more hockey) and was continually impressed with his shot- and point-generation along with his noticeable presence on the ice. Congratulations to Josh Norris on an excellent season.
