The PGA Tour goes to Cromwell, Connecticut this week at the TPC River Highlands for the Travelers Championship. The daily fantasy sites have posted their salaries and the betting market odds are available, so it’s time to show some comparisons between salaries on FanDuel and DraftKings and also between the salaries on these two daily fantasy sites and the betting market odds (taken from mybookie.com) to win the tournament.
On the top panel of the first dashboard, the salaries of each golfer are taken as a percentage of the salary cap in each game. These are then put in a scatterplot (FanDuel on Horizontal Axis and DraftKings on Vertical Axis) with a simple linear trend line. Above the trendline shows where DraftKings has a higher salary-to-cap percentage than FanDuel, while below the line shows the opposite. The two panels on the bottom show the golfers with the highest difference in salary-to-cap between the two games. On the left, in yellow, shows which golfers have a much higher salary-to-cap figure in DraftKings, while on the right, in blue, shows the golfers with higher salary-to-cap figures in FanDuel. Rory McIIroy, Bryson DeChambeau, and Webb Simpson are relatively most expensive on DraftKings, while Louis Oosthuizen, Ryan Moore, and Ryan Palmer are relatively most expensive on FanDuel.
The second dashboard illustrates the top golfers in terms of betting market odds compared to daily fantasy salaries for the tournament. The betting market odds (10-1, 20-1, etc.) are on the vertical axis while the salaries of the golfers in the respective games (FanDuel on top; DraftKings on bottom) are on the horizontal axis. A simple linear trend is shown for each. Golfers above (to the right) of the line have higher fantasy salaries than the implied betting market odds, while golfers below (to the left) the line have lower fantasy salaries than the implied betting market odds (from the simple linear trend in this sample). On FanDuel, Justin Thomas is the most expensive golfer to place on your roster, with Rory Mcllroy available for slightly less at the same betting market odds. Looking at the chart, Bryson DeChambeau, Bubba Watson, and Patrick Reed appear to offer some value in comparing their salaries to the odds. On DraftKings, Justin Thomas, co-favorite on the betting market, is available at a discount to Rory (and less expensive than DeChambeau). Other golfers who, based upon the betting market, appear to be at a discount include Brooks Koepka, Patrick Cantlay, Justin Rose, and Bubba Watson.
Enjoy this weekend’s golf and best of luck with your lineups!
